A Cleaner Ocean Foundation volunteer in London, at the Oceanology International 2022 event, ExCel. ROVs from dozens of manufacturers were on display, covering almost every aspect of marine conservation, surveying and inspection. This one is a ROTV, a towed vehicle from MacArtney. ROVs can be tethered, battery operated with a data umbilical, and there is a special modem option, that is under development. Treasure hunters and archaeologists use ROVs to map sunken lost civilizations and explore wrecks at the bottom of the ocean.

INNOVATION - This amazing autonomous boat was on display at the Old Billingsgate exhibition centre in London on the 9-10th of November 2015. This proof of concept model is only 2.2 metres long. The full size vessel is 44 metres long (144feet) with a suction head some 13.5 metres wide (44 feet) - making it the world's largest vacuum cleaner if it is launched - now unfortunately doubtful - with the original development team disbanded. The SeaVax would have been ideal for river and coastal cleaning duties, and it's solar and wind powered, so would not add to climate change. SeaVax was the only vessel that could deal with ghost fishing nets and micro plastics, without harming marine life. Several years later and fishing gear and plastic waste is still pouring into the ocean. The EU would not fund the development to prototype stage, after three Horizon 2020 applications. On the 3rd application the assessors claimed the technology had already been developed. That is news to us! Where - perhaps in their dreams? A solar boat called PlanetSolar first circumnavigated the globe on the 4th of May of 2012.

INNOVATION - ZERO CARBON TECHNOLOGY: The SeaVax is a solar and wind powered ocean going vacuum ship, that is designed to filter and process plastic waste from seawater. As a means to kickstart the move to a Blue Ocean Economy, healthy oceans are essential. There are dozens of organizations looking for ways to combat the decline in conditions for fish growth, and subsequent 39% drop in marine life since 1970. From January 13 - 17, 2014 Geneva’s CICG center was the site of a major international conference and exhibit aimed at improving access to critical information on the global environment. The GEO-X Plenary and Geneva Ministerial Summit brought together experts from 90 governments and nearly 70 organizations. Topics included Agriculture and Food Security, Measuring Biodiversity, Disaster Risk Reduction, Cholera Early Warning, Ocean Acidification, UNEP Live!, and Water Security. The summit was presided over by GEO’s four co-chairs: China, the European Commission, South Africa and the United States.

PIONEERING - ZERO CARBON TECHNOLOGY: The PlanetSolar, model of the 1st boat to circumnavigate the world using only energy harvested from nature. It took over a year to complete this pioneering voyage in May of 2012 at an average speed of around 2.85 knots.

LEFT: Debut of the SolarNavigator MkI SWATH model exhibited in London December 1994 to January 1995 at Earl's Court. Dozens of visitors signed a book recording their comments on the project.
